Consumer health data privacy

Plainspoken is in development. This notice describes the planned app practices and our handling of any health information received through support.

Scope

Toward Commonweal LLC provides Plainspoken as a general reading tool, not a health service. The app does not request health information, infer health conditions, access HealthKit or send readings to us. Washington law defines collection broadly, including processing. This notice covers health information you choose to process locally or inadvertently include in support; it does not ask you to provide any.

Categories, sources and purposes

If you choose a reading about your own health, its text, title, source, notes and locally generated speech may contain health conditions, diagnoses, treatment or other health information. That content comes from the material and notes you choose and is processed on your device only as needed to save, display, search, annotate, speak or export your requested reading. We do not receive it from the app. If you voluntarily put health details in an email, we may receive those details and your contact information solely to handle that request and remove unnecessary sensitive material.

Sharing and sale

We do not sell consumer health data or use it for advertising, profiling or health inferences. The app does not send health readings to us or our service providers. You control exports, source-site contact and device backups; the chosen recipient, source website or backup provider handles those actions. Our email provider processes support messages on our behalf. We do not otherwise share support health information except as necessary for your request or as required by applicable law.

Control and requests

Stop local processing by closing the reading or removing it; use Remove local readings to clear the Library and pending local work. Existing backups and exports need separate management. We cannot access or delete device-only copies remotely. You may request confirmation, access, deletion or withdrawal of any consent for health information held in support correspondence by emailing hello@towardcommonweal.com. Do not send health records or identity documents to make a request. We verify requests proportionately and respond within the time required by law, normally 45 days. If an extension is legally available and needed, we explain it. You may appeal a denial through the same contact; we respond to an appeal within 45 days and explain how to contact the Washington Attorney General if it is denied. We do not penalize you for exercising these rights.

Retention

Local readings remain until you remove them. We do not need health information to troubleshoot the app and ask you not to send it. Unnecessary sensitive support material is removed when identified; necessary request records are limited to the purpose and legal retention requirement. This notice supplements the general privacy notice. Updated October 24, 2026.
